New Zealand Possum is the third warmest fur in the world, after Polar Bear and Arctic Fox. Unlike those animals, Possums are an introduced pest that are destroying New Zealand's native forests. Hence it is referred to as eco-fur in New Zealand - using these pelts actually supports the preservation of the natural environment. More information on the fur is listed below.
Possum NZ possum fur throws are constructed from the biggest, fluffiest hides and each throw is carefully matched for colour and texture. They then undergo a labour intensive
manufacturing process to ensure all major imperfections are taken out of the pelts, and that the final product lies uniformly and squarely.

The Environmental Impact
A prolific breeder, the Brushtail Possum has become the greatest threat to New Zealand’s native flora. Numbers are estimated at 70 million, and they devour 8 million tonnes of vegetation annually. That equates to 20,000 tonnes (or 4000 truckloads) every night!
In addition to competing for food, Brushtail Possum’s also eat or destroy the eggs and chicks of endangered native birds.
The New Zealand Department of Conservation in conjunction with central and local governments has spent millions of dollars trying to contain the problem, through
humane trapping or baiting. However, full eradication will never be possible.
In addition, harvesters are collecting the animals for processing by tanneries, and it is from this non-farmed source that Possum NZ source their hides. All fur has been harvested from the wild.
New Zealand Possum is not:
- It is not the same as Lapin (Rabbit). Possum does not continually shed and has a hollow fibre ensuring maximum warmth.
- It is not the same as the North American Opossum. While both are marsupials, they are different species.
- It is not farmed or commercially bred. This is
illegal in New Zealand. All Possums are feral and collected according to humane Department of Conservation standards.

Possum NZ was started by Teresa Angliss and is based in Auckland, New Zealand. In addition to being drawn to the soft and luxurious possum fur, the environmental credentials of this natural product also appealed.

This is a good option for combined shipping or special requests. If you are based in New Zealand we can also accept payment directly to our bank account if you contact us. We stand behind our product 100% so if it arrives damaged or you just don't like it please contact us to arrange return and refund, preferably within a week of receiving it.
